Squeee! Fun with stockings!
Jan. 8th, 2012 10:47 amThe
fandom_stocking stockings have gone live, and I received lots of lovely stocking-stuffers. There are cheery holiday wish macros, an SS/HG icon by
kerravonsen, and four lovely fics:
A Glimpse of the Future by
wendymr (DW, 9/Rose/Jack, rated T)
Steel by
philomytha (Vorkosigan, Simon Illyan and Alys Vorpatril, rated G)
Patient, Kind, and Varied by
sahiya (DW, Eleven/River/Rose/Jack and various combinations thereof, rated M)
Untitled TW/SJA crossover by
fififolle (TW/SJA, Owen and Clyde, rated G)
I've already said it there, but thanks to all the lovely gifters, and also thanks to
medie and all the volunteers that make the fun that is
fandom_stocking happen! Last night was hell on wheels at work, so coming home to all these awesome gifts was just so perfect. Please go check out the cool icon and/or the great fics and leave them some love too.
I also had fun writing a few stocking-stuffers, though not as many as I'd set out to do. There's at least one that may yet happen if I can dig myself out of the clueless-Yank hole I dug myself into. *crosses fingers*
Try, Try Again for
ariestess (Leverage, Sophie/Parker, rated G)

Living Well for

A Night to Forget for

Yes, I never got out of G territory, even with Jack. Go figure. LOL

Gen Silent is an excellent video about older members of the LGBTQ community. Its name comes from concerns of the Stonewall Generation feeling they may need to return to the closet as they age and become more dependent on others and thus more vulnerable.
It includes interviews with a lesbian couple, two gay men who became caregivers for their partners, and a transwoman diagnosed with terminal cancer. All bring up issues of being concerned about obstacles to obtaining appropriate care, and what that care might need to be. As one advocate on the film points out, organizations may think they are very positively interacting with the LGBTQ people they serve, but what about those who are afraid to seek services because they simply don't know where they will be safe to do so, especially after having bad experiences.
The story about the home health aide who pulled out a Bible to pray with a gay client and told that person that "it wasn't too late" absolutely made smoke come out of my ears. Many issues, though, are more subtle, and probably don't even enter the thought processes of most providers. And elder abuse is a very real problem, so to be afraid that it will be exacerbated by homophobia and/or transphobia is entirely, unfortunately, realistic. Not to mention, in the context of either supportive housing or skilled nursing facility, concern about the other residents' attitudes and behavior. I see cliquish and hurtful behavior from my residents all the time, and while the staff do what we can to intervene and redirect, it's not something we can stop entirely.
I only know of one explicitly LGBTQ-oriented nursing facility in New England, and frankly I can't find anything other than opening announcements from nearly two years ago, so I don't even know if it's still there. SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) has opened the first LGBTQ-oriented senior center in NYC. There is a definite need for more options like this in tandem with educating providers generally.
I'm very glad to see that this film is out there and hope it will help to raise awareness. I wish I could make it required viewing at the facility where I work and, really, any service organization that serves the elderly. Lacking the power to do that, I encourage you to watch and share this film.

... because I'm starting to loathe the acronym URI (upper respiratory infection).
It's still debatable whether we caught this round of bronchitis in time to avoid a long-term asthma exacerbation like the last round, but efforts have definitely been made. This was complicated by my PCP's office being closed for New Year's yesterday, but thankfully I was able to find a walk-in that was open and had a doc who would listen to me and believe me when I said, "No, I can't produce more verging-on-green phlegm on demand, but I swear that's why I'm here. I'm not stupid enough to want antibiotics for a plain old chest cold."
Antibiotics - check
Secondary inhaler to go with the rescue - check
Cough syrup so's I can sleep - check
Probiotics to offset the GI damage due to antibiotics - check
Garlic soup and hot toddies for general comfort and hopefully at least some killing of germs - check
Incidentally, I'm hugely grateful to
lariopefic for introducing me to Firewhisky Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey at Aeternitas. It makes one hell of a great hot toddy. Now if only I could remember the ingredients for Pepper-up Potion. (It was not Fireball and Rumpleminze, which results in something tasting like the nastiest cough syrup imaginable.)
Patsfan wants to take me out for pizza. This may be better than having him cook, but I don't actually want to go out feeling like this. That and I'm down to one week to cough up (heh) 7500 words of rough draft for
tw_classic_bb, of which I've just cut about a thousand words and rewritten them. That was probably not the best idea but the fic took a surprise left turn and leaving the old stuff in there that no longer fit was confusing me. Oh well, guess pizza's a good break food.

Merry Christmas and Squee!
Dec. 25th, 2011 03:21 amFirst: Merry Christmas to all who are celebrating, and happy Sunday to everyone else!
Second: Squee! My Mistletoe and Hallucinogens gift at

Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating/Pairing: PG, River/Doctor
Prompt: Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"
Why you should go read it: It's a lovely ... I almost want to call it a character sketch, though that isn't quite right, but it has very cool insights into River's character and how she views the Doctor. And it's both Christmassy and not, with wonderfully telling details.
Third: My M&H fic has also posted. If you're up (heh) for a bit of Eleven/River/Jack, swing on by and check out Chance Would Be a Fine Thing as well.

Dec. 22nd, 2011 03:13 pmRemember the three insane writing commitments I made a few months back? Here's where they stand now:
W00t!
who_reversebang has been posting since Monday, and there's some great stuff over there. I highly recommend checking it out.
Next bit of homework, then, is to rewatch some Torchwood S2 to make sure I'm clear on timelines, then that one can get rolling a bit more. And I may just try to write a stocking stuffer or two for
fandom_stocking in between for a bit of a breather.
Which reminds me, if you have a stocking hanging over at
fandom_stocking, please link me? I make no promises about how many stocking stuffers I'll manage to write, but I would like to try to do a few more this year.

The only thing harder to write
Dec. 10th, 2011 01:16 pmthan a sex scene is a fight scene. Actually, if it were a sex scene I was working on, I'd probably be saying the reverse. Both are far too easily reduced to, "and then this happened, and then that happened, and then ..." which is BORING! Am trying to implement some very good advice I once read about the description-to-action ratio, but am also reminded of the extent to which I suck at setting. Ah well. A challenge to be worked on.

Dec. 3rd, 2011 09:34 pmSo, trying to crank out more
who_reversebang fic and decided to try an online tarot spread. (I'm not at home with my own decks.) Of all the decks offered at http://www.facade.com/tarot , Tarot of the Cat People seemed the most appropriate for a Doctor Who related query.
Spread wasn't terribly helpful, more of a "well duh, I knew that" which is cool but, again, not helpful. Amusing, though, was seeing the Queen of Swords and Queen of Cups show up. That ... fits quite well indeed.

In other news, while a nice warm epsom salt soak is good for many people's feet, it is apparently a Very Bad Idea when you are prone to eczema. Which, really, I should've figured out before trying it. Oops.
Finally have draft #1 done for my first deadline. Am brainstorming on the 2nd and chipping away at the third. If I can keep going on
5_for_five, even after the current round ends next week, I should be okay. *crosses fingers*

Made it this week!
Nov. 14th, 2011 10:30 pmI have yet to write a single word of fiction today, and I didn't succeed in my goal of finishing my M & H fic for
bowtiesnblasters, but I did meet the
5_for_five goal and got a cool sticker for it:

I think I can tie the fic off with a scene or two, though, and have the rough draft done before Wednesday's art-prompt-claiming frenzy at
who_reversebang. Then it'll be editing that one and getting it beta'ed whilst working on the others. It's good to be writing again.
For those of you who write, how has your week been? I've seen a few NaNo tickers floating around and am cheering from the sidelines.

This week's goal is to get M & H fic done, as that's the shortest (or at least shortest word requirement) of the lot. At least a draft, maybe even beta-ed. Definitely hoping to submit it prior to Nov 16, the prompt-claim date for

Word count: about 1400

Why you should go read this: What, the warning didn't sell you? There's DW silliness and Remus geekiness and Severus snark. There should also be a beverage alert for several of the one-liners, so I suggest setting anything you don't want to land on your keyboard or monitor aside.

Coming up for air
Oct. 27th, 2011 12:50 pmHow is everyone doing? I'm sorry I've been crap at keeping up with LJ. Work continues to kick my ass. I'm in my 3rd week covering for the regular evening supervisor's vacation, which is moderately insane (how am I supervising nurses with 20+ years experience???), and am finally getting a bit less panicky about it all. Hence the reading the flist more and attempting to get back into the swing of things.
So, of course, I went on a writing sign-up binge. I haven't written since the summer, to go by my
5_for_five tracking spreadsheet, and sadly that sounds about right. Mostly I've about had the energy for mindless games when online or passively reading.
I didn't get my act sufficiently together for
tw_bigbang, but I've modified the idea and run with it for
tw_classic_bb. ETA: before anyone else has a minor coronary reading that before they see the banner below, TW=Torchwood, not Twilight. You know, that other batshit big-T fandom. :-D That seems to be taking off better, though I'm hanging onto the 3k or so I got done of the original to play with another time maybe. One of the nice things about
tw_classic_bb is you have the option of a "mini-bang" of 7500 words, which is where I'm aiming for starters. If the characters get chatty, well, then maybe it'll go big.
Also signed up for the
who_reversebang and Mistletoe and Hallucinogens at
bowtiesnblasters. Yes, the deadlines are sufficiently staggered to be sane. Ish.
Okay, the first two are on top of each other, but if I can't crank out 500+ words of Doctor/River before I even get to claim the art prompt for the other? Something is very wrong. What'll kill me is if either of the smallish fics blows up. Not that my fics ever do that. *eyeroll* At least I'm already on a roll writing the one that's due last, so it should be in good shape even though it'll get set aside when I get my prompts for the first two.
Erm, anyone got a TARDIS I can borrow? Vortex manipulator? Time-turner?

The Sound of Silence
Sep. 28th, 2011 12:29 amOr is anyone else wondering just how many references from The Graduate are in Doctor Who this season? ( What else can I say but ... spoilers! )
I kind of saw this coming (heh) from a mile away, given how some of the questions were set up. I actually think Martha or Donna would make more sense, but I'm hardly complaining.

Which, calendar-wise, the project is for the year, so Happy Mabon to those celebrating, and Happy Fall/Spring (depending what side of the equator you're on) to those who aren't!

You are a charming person who is not afraid to try new things (in the bedroom or otherwise). In situations of high stress, you step up to the plate and pull out the pistol you have been smuggling in your bum to fight your way out. You live life hard and fast and ensure everyone involved has a good time. You are also not beyond bending a few laws (natural or otherwise) to accomplish your goals. You will one day introduce every member of your office staff to the joys of homosexuality.
