So, someone on my flist had just made a very thoughtful post about the effects of AO3 and Tumblr on fandom as a whole and LJ in particular (IJ and DW by association). It took me a minute to process that the "lack of fourth wall" the poster was describing was between us as fannish creators and the rest of the world. I'm not used to thinking of that term with regard to myself and I hadn't thought of it from that angle. The resulting thinky-thoughts got long, so they get their own post.rambly post is rambly )

Anyway, I'm not sure this post came to any kind of a point. Like the cut text says: rambly post is rambly.

I hate getting this invested in a fic (I do not want to look at the chapter number, bad enough that it's 3 digits long) only to find that it's going to have large undercurrents of character-bashing. Especially given that it was recced in a comm that specifies no character bashing. And yes, it is still bashing if the characters in question are turned into evil caricatures of themselves only until they are no longer a threat to the ship you are setting up and then become more recognizable as the characters the reader is familiar with.

It is possible to ship Snape/Hermione without bashing either Ron or Lily. It is possible to ship Miles/Gregor without bashing Ekaterin or Laisa. It is possible to ship Jack/Doctor without bashing either Ianto or Rose, and it is possible to ship Jack/Ianto without bashing either Gwen or Lisa. It's even possible to ship Jack/Gwen without bashing Ianto or Rhys. I know this because I've seen plenty of authors do it and do it well.

Body is cooperating a bit more on the female angle. Less so on the fibro angle today. This most likely has to do with having gone in to work yesterday on 4 hrs sleep. I hate being on-call. Still am for the rest of the weekend. Nobody else is allowed to be sick this weekend!

Or to die for that matter. (Because I totally have any say whatsoever in these things.) One of my troupemates passed away suddenly in her sleep Thursday night. I still am not digesting that. Her husband and daughter are in a similar state of shock from what I've seen. I know I've mentioned that our troupe has a member in her 70s, so I should probably add that is not who it was. I'd be no less sad in that case, but I think I'd have been far less bowled over with shock, as this friend was substantially younger.

On the brighter side, I'm off to celebrate my niece's 2nd birthday today (which is one of the reasons I have declared no one else from work is allowed to call out). And offering drabbles at [livejournal.com profile] hpcon_envy to keep myself busy during any of the minutes I'm not already doing stuff this weekend. Not trying drawbles this year. Hands are too uncooperative.

Now to find the energy to crawl out of bed ...

Have backed it the hell up. Going to attempt to update Flash in Firefox, as I *think* that's part of the problem. Meanwhile, I've been meaning to write & post this for some time.

Comment to this post, and I'll give you seven topics to talk about, which you then post your LJ/DW, and so the meme spreads.

Here are the topics [personal profile] sahiya gave me: first fandom, cooking, holidays, hometown, favorite fic ever, weather, travel

This is going to get long, I can tell.

First Fandom )

Cooking )

Holidays )

Hometown )

Favorite Fic Ever )

Weather )

Travel )

Whew! Okay, there's my 7-topic babble. Comment to get your own 7 topics! ETA: In the absence of coherent thought, which abandoned me sometime this afternoon, I will probably raid your tags and/or interests listed on your profile. You are duly warned.
firefly124: hermione/snape - bit of romance (hgss bit of romance)
Most have already probably seen the updates on [livejournal.com profile] mischievous_t's situation and budding plans to offer support, but for those who haven't, [livejournal.com profile] machshefa has provided a synopsis of how T is doing as well as some insights into what are and are not likely to be helpful forms of support here and an update here.

So, one of the things I'm attempting to do is get all my stuff uploaded to AO3, and here's something I've just discovered: there is no Deathly Hallows Fix-It tag yet.

There's "fix-it" and "character death fix." There is also "Children of Earth fix-it," which made me realize the lack.

Dear HP fandom: wtf? We've been writing DH fix-its since two years before CoE aired, ergo, there's most likely a bit more of them around. You can't tell me the Snape fans are less rabid obsessive prolific writers than the Ianto fans, never mind those fixing any number of other things in DH. :-D

Adding that tag myself. Or, should I say, fixing the lack of fix-it tag.
firefly124: Sam from ER on the phone asking, "Can you hear me now?" (samhearmenow by autumnfoxx)
In theater, hell week is (iirc) the week before a performance opens, spent chasing down every last thing that's trying to go wrong and fix it before opening night. So, yeah, with pinning on Friday, it's a bit like that. (Personal drama: dress I ordered didn't fit and clearly would look like crap even if it did. Found an outfit yesterday that I'm less than thrilled with but will have to do.)

In college, hell week is either finals week or the "reading week" some places schedule between classes and finals, which tends to become crammed with every study group and prep workshop ever perceived. Given that we took practice NCLEX exams yesterday and now have four 8-hour days of review ahead of us, it's a bit like that too.

Good news: apparently, if that practice NCLEX had been real, I'd have passed.

Bad news: I got 100% of the pediatric questions and 75% of the OB questions wrong. And I recognized less than half the drugs that came up (seriously, where did they come up with those???), though I weaseled my way around some of the questions just from the wording. All of which is apparently typical but still annoying.

Other good news: Niece's baptism Sunday was lovely ... once we found a priest. Seems there was a major SNAFU about the time of the service. I'm admittedly rusty on scripture these days, but when Jesus said that thing about the left hand not knowing what the right was doing, I'm pretty sure He didn't mean the admin versus the priests. For all that my mother drives me insane and we have reams of Issues, I do admire her pluck. How many other 70+ year-old women, upon discovering that their granddaughter's baptism may not happen due to bureaucratic idiocy, whip out a cell phone and call the archdiocese to demand a replacement be sent out? (How many have the archdiocese on speed dial, first off?) This was not how the replacement priest was found, but I still admire her for doing it.

There is also mega fannish squeefulness, some of which I can eventually talk about but not yet, some of which I just kind of can't at all without forever linking this handle with my full legal name. I'm bummed about that part, but not enough to take the shine off the squeeage.

Working on hospital residency app #3, which was late before I started due to confusing and conflicting application info. (If they don't hire me for this, I'm tempted to suggest they hire me to edit their website so that it doesn't provide date ranges for things to happen that would require a TARDIS, a Vortex Manipulator, or a Time Turner to actually make sense.) Keeping an eye on local hospitals that don't have new grad residency programs too, but nothing really there yet. (I actually wouldn't mind being in a float pool, but I'd like a residency type orientation first, with at least a couple of weeks on each unit prior to being turned loose to float, not just a few days on each that add up to a few weeks total. That just seems like a recipe for disaster.)

All of which is to say I'm sorry I've fallen behind (again) on drabbling and commenting and such, but I hope to catch up a bit once this week is done. Hugs to those that want 'em!

Since it seems every third person on my flist is doing it, I went and hung my fannish stocking over at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking. It seems like a fun, low-key way to give & get little stuff, with no pressure on what/how much to produce. [community profile] adventdrabbles has gotten my creative juices flowing a bit again, so I have some hope of writing a few things here and there for people and maybe even (finally) starting to chip away at my to-do fic list.

I've missed participating in any of the usual fests these last couple of years, so it was neat to discover this. If you're in a similar boat, go on over and sign up.
