firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
Between [insanejournal.com profile] adventdrabbles and [community profile] fandom_stocking, I've been getting a lot of writing therapy for the last month and a half or so. Most of it has been SPN. Just as my Muse apparently got kidnapped out of Hogwarts and Sunnydale by the TARDIS and Hub, now She's been hijacked by a couple of flannel-clad nightmares in an Impala. *eyeroll*

So, there are Destiel Advent Drabbles that sort of ended up a more-or-less continuous series on both IJ and AO3. Technically more ficlets than drabbles with some full-on one-shots. Not really specific to any show season, despite references to the bunker. Definitely not S9-compliant. Most of the individual stories are rated G or T, but as a couple go to M and E, the whole series gets the E rating. Largely fluffy with occasional feels.

For stocking stuffers, I managed the following:

Title: Lovers' Quarrel
Recipient: [personal profile] trobadora
Fandom: SPN
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Rating: G
Summary: Castiel should have realized nothing about this would be simple.

Title: Best Man for the Job
Recipient: [personal profile] ani_bester
Fandom: SPN
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Rating: G
Summary: Even mostly-grown prophets and hunters-in-training need an adult or two in their lives.

Title: Unexpected
Recipeint: [personal profile] chamilet
Fandom: Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Rating: G
Warning: MPREG
Summary: Ianto had really thought that was just another of Jack’s stories.

Title: Make It Better
Recipient: [personal profile] sahiya
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Nine/Rose/Jack
Rating: G
Summary: Jack’s not overly fond of most primitive first aid approaches, but there’s one that could grow on him.

Title: Rest
Recipient: [personal profile] xylodemon
Fandom: SPN
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Rating: T
Summary: Nothing about this case had gone according to plan, but at least this part Dean could get on board with.

Title: Aftermath
Recipient: [personal profile] phynix
Fandom: SPN
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Rating: M
Summary: The brothers rescue Castiel from Crowley’s lair, but he’s been hurt badly and needs some help before he can heal.

Hoping to get some more done before the next semester starts, though there is still plenty of stuff I'm meant to be doing for school.

I should already be asleep, but I came home to find that [community profile] fandom_stocking had opened up the stockings tonight, and I just had to check out all the lovely gifts I received.

I love them all, and now I must share the squee so you can enjoy them as well. Thanks again to all who dropped in various gifts and greetings, and especially to [personal profile] medie and the various helper elves who made it all happen.

Title: Nine to Five (What a Way to Make a Living)
Author: [personal profile] jenna_thorn
Fandom: Avengers (2012)
Characters: Barton, Romanov, OCs
Rating: T
Summary: Faking busy only went so far when the person walked right up and waited. Rita ctrl-S’d and looked up, pasting what she hoped passed for a professional smile of greeting on her face. Oh god, the Black Widow was standing in front of her. “Agent Hernandez.” It wasn’t a question.

Shit. “Yes, ma’am,” Rita said as she tried to put an elbow over the pink post-it by her keyboard with the most used keycodes scrawled over it. At least she didn’t write down her passwords. Anymore.

“My understanding is that you dance.”

Only if six months of classes at the Y and a year at Hafla for Homebodies counted, Rita thought.
Why you should read it: If the combination of Romanov and bellydance isn't enough, Barton's a sweetie, and the randomly recruited "baby agent" has a really cool epiphany.

Title: Sweetness
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thinlizzy2
Fandom: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Pairing: May/Simmons
Rating: Teen
Why you should read it: The author has some cool insights into Melinda May, how she takes in and processes every detail around her, and how that applies when she is involved with Jemma Simmons. As the title implies, very sweet.

Title: Bones/Booth wallpaper
Artist: [personal profile] tarlanx
Fandom: Bones
Pairing: Bones/Booth
Rating: G
Why you should check it out: It's a very sweet image of them dancing with what I can only call the perfect backdrop.

Title: To Hold Hands and Run Again
Author: [personal profile] sahiya
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Eleven/River
Rating: G
Summary: The Doctor and River, after New York.
Why you should read it: One of the things that felt "unresolved" after "The Angels Take Manhattan" was the Doctor and River actually dealing with what had just happened. This fic tackles that, as well as highlighting River's unique perspective on it.

Title: Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive
Author: [profile] dira_sudis
Reccer: [personal profile] fuzzyboo
Fandom: Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Why you should read it: This is an absolute classic that I haven't revisited in far too long, so it was a treat to be reminded of it. As [personal profile] fuzzyboo put it, it is 19% mpreg by volume, with a lovely plot and some unexpected twists.

Title: Winterfair Interlude
Author: [personal profile] philomytha
Fandom: Vorkosigan saga
Characters: Alys Vorpatril, Simon Illyan
Rating: T
Summary: The story of the time Alys took a weapon from Simon's holster.
Why you should read it: Lady Alys is awesome. Lady Alys in combination with Simon Illyan is extra awesome. Actually, this fic is part of a series exploring the two characters, and one of the earlier fics in the series, Steel, was a stocking gift to me last year that was a joy to revisit as well.

Title: Bones/Booth icons
Artist: [personal profile] chamilet
Fandom: Bones
Pairing: Bones/Booth
Why you should check them out: Just some lovely icons showcasing this adorable, quirky couple.

There were also various lovely graphics and holiday greetings, and one very clever "gift card" for future fic. It really made my night to receive these. Perfect timing, as I'm going to be offline for the bulk of the weekend, so I'm glad I had the chance to read/view/enjoy them all now.

Eventually, I'll post a roundup of the fics I wrote, but for now, I'm going to get some sleep. Long day ahead tomorrow!
Rating: G
firefly124: hermione/snape - bit of romance (hgss bit of romance)
With tomorrow being the big 50th anniversary celebration and special, it seems that [livejournal.com profile] quiz_sshg is doing a Who-themed quiz this week, and one of my stories is among those featured.

Popping over to see if I can recognize any others now!,

Launching into the Trial of a Time Lord. Patsfan actually thinks Six is his favorite Doctor, and I have to admit, I like him better than I had expected to. Peri is even less annoying so far in this than she has been.babble )

I'm so never going to make it by November. Oh well. Finally watched the last bit of The Twin Dilemma today, which I was rolling my eyes about for most of the way. babble )

Anyway, just had to pop over and say a bit. *waves* Hope everyone is doing well.

I should probably now go try to do something that passes for homework. Meep!
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
... the big question is ... )

Inquiring minds want to know but don't want to actually write the fic(s) to find out.

(Still dutifully struggling not to write the DW/SPN bunny a friend planted. Do. Not. Need. More! Have homework!)

Thanks to all who replied to my last post, both on DW and LJ, I have a list-in-progress of must-see episodes that fall after The Armageddon Factor. Plus I've added a couple based on things I've seen/heard or because they're the first/last story for a Doctor, because it only makes sense to me to see their first and last stories if nothing else. Plus I threw in The Two Doctors just in the interest of seeing all the multi-Doctor episodes. Here's where it stands now:

Fourth Doctor
  • Destiny of the Daleks

  • City of Death

  • Warrior's Gate (n/a through Netflix)

  • The Keeper of Traken

  • Logopolis

Fifth Doctor
  • Castrovalva

  • Black Orchid

  • Time-Flight (unavailable)

  • Mawdryn Undead

  • Terminus

  • Enlightenment

  • The Five Doctors

  • Warriors of the Deep

  • The Caves of Androzani

Sixth Doctor
  • The Twin Dilemma

  • Attack of the Cybermen

  • The Mark of the Rani

  • The Two Doctors

  • The Trial of a Time Lord (which is apparently 14 episodes!)

Seventh Doctor
  • Time and the Rani

  • Dragonfire

  • Remembrance of the Daleks

  • The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

  • Battlefield

  • Ghost Light

  • The Curse of Fenric

  • Survival

Eighth Doctor
  • The Movie which seems to be universally regarded as craptastic, but doesn't really seem skippable

  • books/audio of some kind

Um, yeah, considering most of those are at least 4 episodes and one story is an entire 14-ep season, that's quite enough of a list to try and get through by November! :-D

Thanks, all, for the suggestions!

So, over the course of the past couple of years, I've been attempting to watch Classic Who through from the start, minus the obviously unwatchable eps that were lost to fire or otherwise destroyed. My progress has been somewhat underwhelming, as I've only just finished the Fourth Doctor's Key to Time story-series. November's approaching fast, with various anniversary-related things such as the classic multi-doctor audio book and whatever they'll do with the anniversary ep, and I'm finding that I'm less interested in seeing every little thing in order and more interested in getting a feel for all the Doctors.

So, here's my question for those of you who know your classics. What are the key stories that you would recommend in order to accomplish that? What else must I absolutely see before moving on from Four, and what do I absolutely need to see of Five, Six, and Seven? Eight is a bit easier, obviously.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
I'm amused to note that not only does the group presentation I'm frantically preparing for this evening essentially boil down to cosplay (of a triad of nursing theorists) but that in my role as Margaret Newman, I get to make the point that while most perceive health on a linear continuum from illness to wellness, the reality as I see it is that it's a great big ball of wibbly-wobbly healthy-wealthy stuff there's a dynamic relationship between illness and non-illness and the way in which a person's consciousness grows in response to that is the measure of health.

If I thought more than a handful would get it, I'd be tempted to throw in the wibbly-wobbly line for real.

If you use a Kindle, including computer or phone app, and are a Whovian, there is a free ebook on Amazon.com called Dining with the Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook. A friend just clued me in to it, and I'm just poking around in it on my laptop, and the first recipe at least looks like fun! There's a recipe for each episode from Rose through The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe plus a plethora of variations on fish fingers and custard.
firefly124: 9th doctor - fantastic (fantastic9 by dawn_e_h)
Today has been a rough one fibro-wise, so it was the perfect day to receive stocking stuffers that made me smile, and I've received quite the range of very cool gifts, including various cute graphics and well-wishes as well as the following fics:

AtS tinyficlet by [personal profile] yhlee (Angel: the Series, Fred/Gunn, G)

A Vorkosigan ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] sheffsfic (Vorkosigan, Miles/Ekaterin, G)

Lair by [personal profile] merryghoul (Leverage, Parker/Sophie, G)

Something Different by [personal profile] tarlanx (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto, M)

I Bring Thee Glad Tidings by [personal profile] yamx (Doctor Who, Nine/Jack/(Rose), G)

Blindsided by [personal profile] sahiya (Doctor Who, Eleven/River/Jack, E/NC17)

Christmas in July by [livejournal.com profile] tiny_white_hats (Angel: the Series, Fred/Gunn, PG)

I am hugely grateful for all of these and hope some of you will go and enjoy them as well!

I didn't write as much as I'd hoped, didn't even manage to stray out of Doctor Who (unless you count the crossover), but I had fun writing what I did. There are two or three that I got started that ran away from me, which I hope to finish and post before school resumes at the end of the month. The ones I did complete are

Crazy for [personal profile] joking (Crossover, Eleven and Sherlock, G)

The Wedding Planner for [personal profile] sahiya (Doctor Who, Vastra/Jenny (in absentia) and Eleven/River, G)

War Games for [personal profile] yamx (Doctor Who, Nine/Rose/Jack, M)

Peace and Quiet for [personal profile] fuzzyboo (Doctor Who, Nine, Rose, and Jack, G)

It's been another fun year, for sure. I've said it there already, but huge kudos to the mods for pulling this off. There were something like 360 stockings to manage this year, which I can't even fathom the logistics of.

Thank you, Moff, for adding to the list of otherwise-ordinary things your viewers are now traumatized by. You do it well.

Thanks also for what is sure to be another intriguing mystery arc. Now lemme stick the rest under the cut )

Meanwhile, I should be getting ready for the first Date Night in far too many months, so enough of that for now. Just had to babble a bit. Anybody have any other fun theories?
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Nothing new, right? The insanity bit anyway. In this instance, it's that I've signed up to participate in the [livejournal.com profile] who_at_50 Fanwork-a-thon-a-thon. The idea is that there'll be a different theme/Doctor featured each month counting down to the 50th anniversary. Some, I'll be no use for, but January is Eleven, and him I think I can handle. Ish.

Who's with me?

(In other news, I'm nowhere near Newtown and am guiltily relieved not to know anyone involved. I did, however, get hit with almost 8 solid hours of news coverage at work yesterday, because some of my residents were very insistent about keeping it on. I've shorted out. What little I can do for those helping the families has been done, and that's where it needs to stop for me. I figured I ought to say something here though, lest this random chipper post from the wilds of Connecticut seem outrageously callous, which it may well do anyway.)
firefly124: river song smiling (river smiling by michaela0823)
If you haven't been reading Everyday Life with the Ponds by DQBunny, you should anyway. The chapter-tag for last night's ep, well, even the title is a spoiler ) It started out as slices of, well, Pond Life, and then along came "Pond Life," and we got minisode tags, and now this. :-D

It took me long enough to get my [livejournal.com profile] hpcon_envy fics done, but done and posted they are. Probably just about in time for the next round for Dragon Con. *rolls eyes @ self* Also, these were meant to be drabbles. Only one came close, and one got completely away from me and threatened to keep going. Oops?

Title: First Steps
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] bambu345
Fandom(s): Vorkosigan
Rating: G
Word Count: 121
Prompt: Perhaps the moment before Cordelia sees Aral after having escaped her own planet? She's left everything for him, but hasn't seen him yet after having made such an enormous, bridge-burning choice.
A/N: Once I revisited this bit of canon, I realized I had to go a tad earlier, as we actually do get Cordelia's interior monologue as she goes from meeting Count Piotr to finding Aral. Hope this suits.

Title: Anything but Routine
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] morethansirius
Fandom(s): In order of appearance: Torchwood, Harry Potter, Doctor Who
Rating: G
Word Count: 1452
Prompt: I would love to see what happens when Doctor Ten, Captain Jack and Unspeakable Snape all arrive to investigate the same crime scene/alien phenomenon/magical occurrence.
A/N: Set just before “Reset” for Torchwood, between the “Voyage of the Damned” & “Partners in Crime” for Doctor Who, and way after Deathly Hallows for the Potterverse.

Title: Everything Hasn't Changed Yet
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] orlando_switch
Fandom(s): Harry Potter, Torchwood
Rating: G
Word Count: 200
Prompt: The post Voldemort era leaves Lucius disillusioned and (according to Jason Isaac) emasculated - and therefore in dire need to regain his self-confidence/masculinity/virility and a new perspective at the world. Unfortunately, everyone in his own world is too busy building up their life to offer him a helping hand. I'd like to see an encounter between him and captain Jack, a man who has seen it all, done it all but never lost his touch to celebrate life.
A/N: Sometime in 1999, well after Deathly Hallows and before Jack assumes control of Torchwood 3.
firefly124: Jack, Rose, & the 9th Doctor (OT3 with 9 by dameruth)
I didn't write anything, haven't even managed to write my [livejournal.com profile] hpcon_envy prompts yet, but I've very much enjoyed reading the fills.

Wrap-up post with links to each fic here.

Will post a real post sometime soon. Meanwhile, enjoy the fic!
firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
So that one night that I was trying desperately to squeeze out 500 words by midnight ended up being the only night I wrote at all.

The week was just nuts between one thing and another. I did get some good brainstorming and idea-bouncing done. Helped that I had 2 hours each way on a train with my slash beta to toss ideas around, some of which got really cracktastic but some of which got things moving in the right direction. Whew! Now to actually get the damned thing finished.
firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
Today has 21 minutes left, and so far I've written 97 words. Not an auspicious start if I hope to beat last week's word count/days of writing. Though I did at least manage to keep writing.

Just kept writing.

In other news, [personal profile] elf/[livejournal.com profile] elfwreck and I have been playing around with a Doctor Who Major Arcana symbology here.

17 13 minutes left to write at least 403 words. Erm ... best get to it then. After which I can dither about WTF I'm going to wear that works both for a nurses' meeting and to go to NYC to see Dogboy and Justine tomorrow.
