firefly124: eleventh doctor and amy leaning against tardis (eleven and amy by griggharris)
[personal profile] firefly124
Today was a bit off. Had to get up in the middle of the afternoon and go tutor some friends. So I'm only just watching DW now. I caught a semi-spoilery comment on my flist beforehand, not terrible, but enough that I knew I'd want to do running commentary on this one.

Because there's loads of echoes of past stuff to be seen already, at less than 8 minutes in.

Alternate reality but it's hard to tell which is what. Vaguely reminiscent of what went on when Donna was "saved" in "Forest of the Dead."

The lights are out, the TARDIS is dead, and we've not seen that happen since "Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel." (Please tell me this isn't a Cybermen episode.)

Ooh, but just before that? Can I just say how much I love this exchange:

Rory: OK, well, we're in a spaceship that's bigger on the inside than the outside.
Amy: With a bow tie-wearing alien.
Rory: So maybe "what rings true" isn't so simple.

Er, Rory's gone from nurse to doctor in 5 years? Not sure how things work in the UK, but I'm pretty sure that's impossible here. (Nurse to nurse practitioner, which in many states--including mine--is pretty much on par with MD, is another story.) Slightly annoyed that it's seen as Rory's dream to be a doctor rather than a nurse. It's not like one's a stepping stone to the other. They're parallel professions with different foci. But, of course, most nurses are women, so it must be a lesser profession, and any man who's a nurse is just waiting for something less emasculating to come along. /rant

Ah, now I see why the spoilery bit I caught mentioned "End of Days." This Dream Lord does seem a bit like Bilis Manger. (This could also have to do with the fact I've been rereading The Twilight Streets, thus any creepy character who randomly pops up and vanishes at will would remind me of him.) The ticking might also be reminding me of him, though they've yet to see a clock, much less a clock shop.

WTF is with the birds?

Good on Amy! Nice bluff. Nice job calling him on his shit. Because this town isn't dull, it's creepy as hell. And anyway, she's right. "This is my life now, and it just turned you white as a sheet, so don't you call it dull again." Ha! Have I mentioned how much I love Amy?

About 40 minutes before you're going to crash into a sun? Yes, that sounds vaguely familiar as well ("42"), but wtf is a cold star? I'm with Rory: hard to believe this is the real reality.

Parasites that keep people alive and healthy long past where they should be. "Reset" anyone? Have I mentioned that the lack of subtitles in downloads drives me batty? Because it does. I haven't a clue what these aliens are called. Couldn't make it out at all.

All right, I thought I was pushing it, but bits of this village really are reminding me of "Countrycide" too. The house they're hiding in, though that could just be common architecture for rural houses in the UK. Hiding in the butcher shop though, and murderous villagers busting in. More of a visual echo than anything though. Meh. Back and forth on this one. Kind of a stretch, I guess.

Ah, so this is why "End of Days" was brought up. Husband/BF dies, big damn hero can't fix it, so "What is the point of you?" Rather different way of fixing it though. Hope she's right about this being the dream world. Not crazy about the idea that she doesn't care and is willing to commit suicide even if it is the real world, because up until now, it hasn't really seemed like she needed either of her "boys" to validate her existence.

Both are dreams. Of course! That only makes sense. Now. Couldn't see it before though. Of course the Dream Lord doesn't have power over the real world, can't really create a cold star.

Psychic alien pollen? Well, I suppose it's less cliche than alien sex pollen. Ooh, and the Dream Lord is the Doctor! Seems so obvious now. The bow tie should've given it away.

A bit bothered that Rory isn't more bothered by Amy having been willing to commit suicide for real over his death. That's not romantic, it's horrible. And if he really cares about her, he ought to be pointing out that he wants her to live her life, even if he dies. That bit definitely leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Despite that, overall it was a good ep. Better than the last pair, I think, because despite the fact I got caught up in the echo-y stuff, the actual mystery of the ep held me. I don't see what we can take from it for the larger seasonal arc though. *ponders*
