What better way to end a 16-hour workday than to come home to the sound of gentle rainfall ... emanating from the basement.

Called the landlord, who lives on the other side of the state but kind of needs to authorize the plumber call. No answer. Left message.

Called the plumber who's worked on this building since we moved in over 11 years ago. Who was here to try to fix the tub leak just a month ago or so.* He's been forced to retire due to a serious injury. He was very nice about being woken up at 1am despite this. *winces* Suggested another plumbing service, but I'm not sure what the fallout is if the landlord has a new contract with a new plumber and I call someone else, even for an emergency when he never told us there was any change. I feel like a serious heel for waking up our former plumber like that.

Puttered around trying to figure out how to just make it stop, at least for a few hours. Seriously considered trying duct tape. Doubt even that would stick to pipes that are actively spouting water everywhere, but it was looking pretty good. Finally found main water shut-off for the building. Shut it off. Note: there was water along the sides of the piping there too. This may not work for long. But in the meantime, its holding. How can I tell? Well, the tub isn't dripping. *facepalm* Guess that's a bit of a silver lining.

Have hung apologetic notes to the other 3 tenants explaining why they are going to wake up to NO WATER in a few hours. Am debating whether it's a good thing I discovered this tonight or a bad thing. We have a lot of crap stored down there, as do others, so yeah, a good thing, even if tomorrow morning is going to SUCK. Hell, it sucks now. I got slimed by the pipes and waded through cobwebs, and I obviously can't shower, so am making do with "moist towelettes." Ugh.

*Note the wording. Tried to fix the tub leak. Jury-rigged something that only resulted in the leak coming through the shower head instead of the faucet. Was supposed to come in another week or so to do a major thingy that involved going in through the bedroom wall because the pipes are just that bad. So is it any surprise that pipes are just spontaneously sprouting leaks? No, no it is not. May be time to consider moving before the whole place falls down around our ears, because things just keep getting patched and jury-rigged, not outright fixed. Better now than the middle of next semester.
