Miracle Day reaction post
Jul. 9th, 2011 03:46 amUnsurprisingly, I've got mixed feelings about it. Fortunately, I'm very good at following multiple AU's simultaneously, so I'm basically just taking it as yet another AU. The fact that much of it scans like a response from RTD to many of the post-CoE fan reactions does jolt me out of it periodically though.
I love how well the contradictions in Gwen are coming across. She has nightmares but tells her daughter about the beautiful bits. She wants nothing to do with it all and is hiding out in the countryside, but you can see the adrenaline rush kick in when the action arrives anyway. Her grabbing the little earmuffs for her daughter as the shooting starts kind of summed that all up. I have some hope that more of the complexities of her character will make it more explicitly to the screen this time around as a result, rather than being merely hinted at and then not fleshed out in ways that have basically provided tinder for the Gwen-hate.
I was blown away a) by the purpose behind Pullman's character (and then annoyed that I hadn't thought of it as being kind of obvious, given what had been leaked/teased about the main plot line), and b) that they did actually keep the pedophile aspect after all. I'm still not sure how I feel about that given ...
WTF with the 456 being referenced every other minute? They've turned into a CIA file classification level? Now, I had said all along that considering from what we could see on-screen, it seemed they'd basically been given a bloody nose, that they were likely to come back in force, so that feels pretty ominous. Because really, that's what happened. Alien junkies hit Earth up for a score 40-odd years ago and Earth caved to make them go away. They came back looking for a bigger score and were sent packing. Fairly likely they'd come back with a larger contingent, and we already know they have the apparent capacity to prolong human life under conditions that should be impossible and a definite expertise in bioweaponry.
Meanwhile, how did Jack know to come back now? How *did* he come back now? I wonder if that will just be the sort of thing he never quite explains (which would be intriguing from a fic perspective if annoying as a viewer). And I'd wondered, after getting spoiled for his renewed mortality, just exactly how one could determine that without, you know, killing him. I'm kind of peeved that it's by the non-healing of wounds, because we've seen in the past that non-life-threatening wounds can take time to heal on him, and sufficiently damaging death can too (CoE, Pack Animals). Also, I'm still (probably futilely) hoping that the timing of Torchwood vs Doctor Who this year means we may see him back on Doctor Who.
So, the long and short of it is I'm intrigued, if still cautious about getting too invested in it. I'm also looking forward with some excitement to the radio plays next week. Which, I can see why they placed the UK air date after them, but why did it start before them here? If I didn't know I'd get spoiled rotten in the meantime, I'd have waited until after the plays to watch it myself.
In other news, I let myself be talked into picking up per diem hours at old!job this weekend, which means I'm just finishing up a double shift. My relief can arrive any time now, plskthx.
