More thoughts on EoT

Not at all surprisingly, I'm still dealing with a lot of ambivalence about the Jack/Alonzo thing.
rm's commentary on it (point #7) got me to look at it a bit less negatively for awhile. But I still keep coming back to it being too soon. After Steven as well as after Ianto, but obviously as fans we're more invested in the character we knew for more than ten minutes. Also, the parallels work better when focusing on romance.
Because I can't help comparing it with 10/Rose. By the end of S3, I think most of us were right there with Martha, muttering "Good ol' Rose." But you know what? At least there was more than a five minute epilogue and a sad stare into a drink in a bar. No, we don't know how far along his timeline Jack is when the Doctor introduces him to Alonzo. The only thing we sort of have to go on is Alonzo's age, and since he's not human, we've no idea whether he's really only two years older or ten or fifty, so we don't know if it's been just over six months for Jack or a year or whatever. As a viewer, though, with no real cues to go on, I experienced it as way too soon. And that sends a really lousy message: when the Doctor loses a woman he loves, it takes eons to move on, but when Jack loses a man he loves, hardly any (screen) time at all.
Here's the other thing though. It's totally consistent with 10's character to do exactly what he did.
Look at "Journey's End." What does he do? He tosses his human clone to Rose as a consolation prize. And dude, does anyone think they didn't both end up messed up by that whole scenario? Others have pointed out similarities between Alonzo and Ianto that I hadn't picked up on until I rewatched "Voyage of the Damned" with those comments in mind. Now that I can see it, yeah, it pretty much seems like the same thing all over again. "Here, have a look-alike." Not to the same extent, but ... yeah.
Doesn't make it any better. Just consistent.
