Went to a family function last night. Once the DJ moved beyond disco into some rock and generic functiony dance music (attempted once again to get people to do the Electric Slide on beat, unsuccessfully), the dancing was fun. Until, y'know, the asthma decided to act up.

Grrr. You know, having to use the inhaler every so often has become less annoying as it has become more familiar. But when it interferes with dancing, I just get mad. It can't just be exertional. I work way harder at Curves than I was doing on that dance floor. So I decided to see what I could find about the relationship between alcohol and asthma.

The results are ... weird. Wine can be an asthmatic trigger, apparently due to sulfites. I wasn't drinking wine. Sambuca and soda, actually. Alcohol in and of itself should supposedly open the airways, but in the next breath (hah) the by-products of metabolizing it may set off a histaminic response. So, in other words, there are studies to say it helps, studies to say it aggravates, and the only thing that seems to be consistent is the wine thing, which isn't applicable in this case.

Oddly enough, the albuterol did next to nothing, but chamomile did. Had I known about the histamine thing, I'd have popped a Benadryl, which I generally have on me anyway and had considered, but there was nothing else to suggest I needed it ... and I wasn't too thrilled about tossing that into my system on top of the alcohol.

Other possible contributing factors include the humidity (which was bad, but not horrible compared to earlier in the week), everybody's 8 million colognes (though if those are going to bother me, it's usually my eyes or sinuses), or I was pushing harder than I realized dancing, because, y'know, it's dancing and not exercise machines, so maybe I just didn't realize it.

Ah well. Time to see if I can't move up that check-up, because clearly this has moved into the "we need to be doing more about this" zone. And "don't dance" is not, I repeat NOT an option. Dance more and build the stamina back up would be a far, far preferable verdict.
