... because I'm starting to loathe the acronym URI (upper respiratory infection).

It's still debatable whether we caught this round of bronchitis in time to avoid a long-term asthma exacerbation like the last round, but efforts have definitely been made. This was complicated by my PCP's office being closed for New Year's yesterday, but thankfully I was able to find a walk-in that was open and had a doc who would listen to me and believe me when I said, "No, I can't produce more verging-on-green phlegm on demand, but I swear that's why I'm here. I'm not stupid enough to want antibiotics for a plain old chest cold."

Antibiotics - check
Secondary inhaler to go with the rescue - check
Cough syrup so's I can sleep - check
Probiotics to offset the GI damage due to antibiotics - check
Garlic soup and hot toddies for general comfort and hopefully at least some killing of germs - check

Incidentally, I'm hugely grateful to [livejournal.com profile] lariopefic for introducing me to Firewhisky Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey at Aeternitas. It makes one hell of a great hot toddy. Now if only I could remember the ingredients for Pepper-up Potion. (It was not Fireball and Rumpleminze, which results in something tasting like the nastiest cough syrup imaginable.)

Patsfan wants to take me out for pizza. This may be better than having him cook, but I don't actually want to go out feeling like this. That and I'm down to one week to cough up (heh) 7500 words of rough draft for [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb, of which I've just cut about a thousand words and rewritten them. That was probably not the best idea but the fic took a surprise left turn and leaving the old stuff in there that no longer fit was confusing me. Oh well, guess pizza's a good break food.

W00t!

[livejournal.com profile] who_reversebang has been posting since Monday, and there's some great stuff over there. I highly recommend checking it out.

Next bit of homework, then, is to rewatch some Torchwood S2 to make sure I'm clear on timelines, then that one can get rolling a bit more. And I may just try to write a stocking stuffer or two for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking in between for a bit of a breather.

Which reminds me, if you have a stocking hanging over at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, please link me? I make no promises about how many stocking stuffers I'll manage to write, but I would like to try to do a few more this year.

How is everyone doing? I'm sorry I've been crap at keeping up with LJ. Work continues to kick my ass. I'm in my 3rd week covering for the regular evening supervisor's vacation, which is moderately insane (how am I supervising nurses with 20+ years experience???), and am finally getting a bit less panicky about it all. Hence the reading the flist more and attempting to get back into the swing of things.

So, of course, I went on a writing sign-up binge. I haven't written since the summer, to go by my [livejournal.com profile] 5_for_five tracking spreadsheet, and sadly that sounds about right. Mostly I've about had the energy for mindless games when online or passively reading.

I didn't get my act sufficiently together for [livejournal.com profile] tw_bigbang, but I've modified the idea and run with it for [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb. ETA: before anyone else has a minor coronary reading that before they see the banner below, TW=Torchwood, not Twilight. You know, that other batshit big-T fandom. :-D That seems to be taking off better, though I'm hanging onto the 3k or so I got done of the original to play with another time maybe. One of the nice things about [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb is you have the option of a "mini-bang" of 7500 words, which is where I'm aiming for starters. If the characters get chatty, well, then maybe it'll go big.

Also signed up for the [profile] who_reversebang and Mistletoe and Hallucinogens at [community profile] bowtiesnblasters. Yes, the deadlines are sufficiently staggered to be sane. Ish.

Okay, the first two are on top of each other, but if I can't crank out 500+ words of Doctor/River before I even get to claim the art prompt for the other? Something is very wrong. What'll kill me is if either of the smallish fics blows up. Not that my fics ever do that. *eyeroll* At least I'm already on a roll writing the one that's due last, so it should be in good shape even though it'll get set aside when I get my prompts for the first two.

Erm, anyone got a TARDIS I can borrow? Vortex manipulator? Time-turner?

In case I've not yet tempted you to join in the two that are still taking sign-ups, here are their shiny banners:

Title: There Are Stranger Things in Leadworth than in Heaven or Hell
Author: [livejournal.com profile] huskyfriends
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Rating/Pairings: PG, Rory/Amy, Jack/Ianto
Summary: Leadworth seems to be full of surprises for Torchwood.
Why you should go read it right now: Because of course Leadworth would have weirdness to attract Torchwood, and Rory and Jack interacting on Rory's home turf is something that should totally have happened in canon, and now has in my head-canon, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] huskyfriends. Plus, haven't you been wondering what-all happened in those two years between the Atraxi/Prisoner Zero business and Amy taking off the night before her wedding? Well, then. Go, read, and enjoy.

(Erm, I guess this also serves as my "yes, we survived Irene and even have our power back" post.)
firefly124: error message stating: canon error, apply fanfic? (canon error apply fanfic)
Two fandoms, two gutting character deaths. In one, I'm startlingly okay with following where canon has gone since (while still preferring to read & write fic that either ignores or fixes said character death). In the other, I have yet to see (and have no desire to see) either half of the final installment in movie form, lest said character death be made more real once seen on-screen, as if I don't believe I'd still be able to buy into or write fic in which said character death either never happened or is fixed. Have read and written more in fandom #2. Am currently reading and writing more in fandom #1. Oh, and I've had an additional two years to process the character death in fandom #2, in which I'd actually *like* to be writing more but have been struggling with for rather a while now.

WTF, brain?

In other news, due to a call-out, I came off orientation a day early. Managed okay, so far as I know (guess I'll find out what I missed, documentation-wise, on Monday, as I'm sure there was something). Am once again having moments of "WTF was I thinking with this whole nursing thing?" Hopefully they'll pass.

Radio play flailage. )
firefly124: error message stating: canon error, apply fanfic? (canon error apply fanfic)
Unsurprisingly, I've got mixed feelings about it. Fortunately, I'm very good at following multiple AU's simultaneously, so I'm basically just taking it as yet another AU. The fact that much of it scans like a response from RTD to many of the post-CoE fan reactions does jolt me out of it periodically though.

More rambling )

So, the long and short of it is I'm intrigued, if still cautious about getting too invested in it. I'm also looking forward with some excitement to the radio plays next week. Which, I can see why they placed the UK air date after them, but why did it start before them here? If I didn't know I'd get spoiled rotten in the meantime, I'd have waited until after the plays to watch it myself.

In other news, I let myself be talked into picking up per diem hours at old!job this weekend, which means I'm just finishing up a double shift. My relief can arrive any time now, plskthx.
firefly124: river tam looking hopeful (river hopeful by tessith)
I'm rewatching Firefly and introducing Patsfan to it. He's getting into it. I, on the other hand, keep making observations like, "Oh, right, Saffron's where RTD got the idea for the paralyzing lip gloss," and "Oh yeah, I remember calling 'Fragments' Torchwood's 'Out of Gas' episode." This led to a brief debate over the relative merits, ending with mutual agreement that "Out of Gas" did the temporal transitions much better, but it was still cool to get the backstory on all the characters in "Fragments." Patsfan, however, apparently outright hated "Fragments," while I remain more of the opinion that it just could've been better structured.

Yes, my brain is broken. Is this news?

Title: When You Go Down To The Woods Today (You're Sure Of A Big Surprise)
Author: [personal profile] remuslives23
Pairings/Characters: Jack Harkness/Remus Lupin
Rating: NC17
Summary: This is the story of how Jack learned the truth about werewolf mythology.
Why you should read it: It's hot as hell, makes complete sense as a crossover point, and did I mention the hotness? Of course, I'm slightly biased, as [personal profile] remuslives23 wrote it for me as part of the [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction fundraiser. Go. Read. Enjoy.

AO3 stuff

firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
If anyone else who participated in the Whipped Cream Day mini-ficathon uses An Archive of Our Own, there is now a collection for those fics, which you can either post to or, if your fic is already up on AO3, I think you can edit to associate with the collection if you want.

Also, since [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking had an AO3 collection, I've uploaded the various things I wrote there.

Whew! That's more than I realized. And at some point, I need to upload the rest, just to have everything in one place. At some point.

Now to tend to various fandom responsibilities I've let slide. Meep!
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
I got lots of lovely gifts here. Fics, an icon, recs, graphics. A bit of everything, really. There's Snupin, Nine/Rose/Jack, Tosh and Ianto, Eleven/River/Jack, Scoobies and Giles in Santa hats, and a slew of Cordelia/Aral recs. Seriously, go check it out!

I know I've already said it in comments there, but bit thanks to everyone who wrote, made graphics/icons, or just left holiday wishes for me. And very huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] medie for running [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking. There were 286 stockings, Gods only know how many fandoms represented, and somehow, everybody got at least something. "Somehow" involved tons of work, first posting the stockings and then monitoring to be sure they were filled.

Ironically, I ended up writing both more and less than I'd planned for others' stockings. More in the sense of volume. Less in the sense that I had made a list of friends' stockings with the intent to write specific things for them, and that pretty much didn't happen. Mostly, with a couple of exceptions, I wrote for people I don't know at all or don't know well. I'm not sure what that's about. It bothers me, though, especially as quite a few of the people I'd intended to but didn't succeed in writing for did write lovely things for me. Then again, part of the point to the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking deal is that it isn't an exchange and there aren't supposed to be expectations. I just put expectations on myself anyway. *eyeroll*

At some point, I'll post the things I wrote to AO3 and wherever else makes sense. It was definitely an interesting experience that I look forward to repeating, as it stretched me to write some pairings I'd never done, Martha/Jack and Jaenelle/Karla circa "Prince of Ebon Rih" for two that come to mind.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Is there one? I mean, come on, if ever a "what did they declare this day for" thingy demanded a ficathon, surely it's National Whipped Cream Day. I mean, if we added a ficathon, we could probably very quickly make it International Whipped Cream Day.

So, who's with me? Either find someplace already running one, or have our own in comments here! Any and all fandoms and pairings (or more, or gen), obviously. Someone on Twitter already asked me for Jane/Maura whipped cream fic. Alas, I don't even know a fandom that has both a Jane and a Maura. But surely someone does!

ETA: Apparently that'd be Rizzoli & Isles, the new Cagney & Lacey, which I'm going to have to check out. Meanwhile, attempting to churn out (heh) at least one ficlet to get things rolling before I have to run to work.

firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
Forgot to do this yesterday. There's certainly nowhere near as much in years past, partly due to nursing school and partly due to the 271K+ insanity that is The Fic That Wouldn't Stay Dead. But other stuff did get written!

Of course, compiling that reminded me that I missed the deadline to write something Snupiny for December for the Year of Snupin challenge. *sigh* I reminded myself more than once over the past week to do it, too. Damn.

Still trying to write a few more [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking stuffers, as the reveal isn't until the 6th, I think, so rather than keep track of what was 2010 and what was 2011, I'll just count it all as 2011.
firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
Mostly fluff, occasional angst. It's nice to actually be able to do a weekly wrap-up post.

firefly124: Sam from ER on the phone asking, "Can you hear me now?" (samhearmenow by autumnfoxx)
Last night was my last clinical shift. W00t! (Also, eek!) Finally got to do 4 patients with meds on 4. Believe it or not, we had a patient shortage this semester that made it very difficult to make sure everyone got enough turns having 3 patients with meds and did 4 at least once.

Sixteen days until pinning.

One more lecture. One more panel. One more pharm exam. One more med sheet. And one more final.

And then of course the NCLEX, which I still don't really understand the registration process for. (The state wants you to file with the testing company first. The testing company wants you to file with the state first. I think I'm going to go with my classmate's suggestion to just mail them both out simultaneously. We actually have a separate online class that should be about getting our heads straight about stuff like this. It's not working.)

But! The point is: light at the end of the tunnel. Possibly not an oncoming train after all. Meep! Starting to apply to the few places that have new grad programs of some sort. The residency I wanted is timed all wrong, though there are rumors they may run another in March, which I'd definitely go for if I haven't found something by then.

Also, because apparently this must always be the case, last night's bit of fannish weirdness. )

Yes, I'm nuts. I thought we'd already established that?

Title: Don't Think You Knew You Were in This Song
Author: [personal profile] azn_jack_fiend
Fandoms/Spoilers: Doctor Who until S5. All of Torchwood including Children of Earth.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack, the Jones family
Rating: PG-13 for language, some sexual suggestiveness
Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's travelled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Why you should read it: I'd never really given much thought to the parallels between Mickey's and Jack's lives, nor to the fact that Mickey is the last human on Earth who knew Jack when he was mortal, if only briefly. [personal profile] azn_jack_fiend gave this some thought and not only came up with a fic that shows great insight into both characters, it makes some sense out of the canon gap of "Martha's engaged to Tom but now she's married to Mickey."

Title: Sun-Kissed
Author: [personal profile] remuslives23
Fandom/Spoilers: Torchwood through Exit Wounds
Rating: G
Summary: 'There have been far too few smiles recently. Far too few moments like this where the rift is quiet, and Gwen is with Rhys, and they manage to emerge from under the ground to enjoy the very things they are working so damn hard to save.'
Why you should read it: The imagery and language in this convey layers of insight into both Jack and Ianto as well as touching on more universal themes of finding hope and moving forward.
firefly124: Jack holding Ianto icon by iconillusion (janto6 by iconillusion)
I'm a little surprised I didn't rec this the first time I read it, but now there's extra stuff to go with.

Title: The Extraterrestrial
Author: [personal profile] nancybrown
Fandoms: Torchwood and E.T. - The Extraterrestrial
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Gwen/Rhys, Johnson, Lois, Alice, Steven, Rhiannon, OCs
Summary: Torchwood sees yet another alien menace, but to a lonely little boy, it's his new best friend. Written for the [community profile] reel_torchwood challenge.
Why you should read it: E.T./Torchwood is just an excellent concept, and [personal profile] nancybrown added some cool character insights and bits of backstory to both canons that fit very nicely. Plus just when you think you've worked it all out, she throws a curveball at you, just to keep you on your toes.

Yesterday, she added this lovely coda, which is what prompted me to reread the original fic.

Title: The Boy Who Lived
Author: [personal profile] nancybrown
Fandoms: Torchwood, E.T. The Extraterrestrial
Rating: G
Summary/Prompt: Any day after the story finishes, Jack, Ianto, Alice and Steven having a meal together or some other type of family bonding that's also a bit of a debrief/post-mortem of the alien visit.
Why you should read it: Steven's POV on Uncle Jack bringing Mr. Jones for dinner is adorable, especially his interpretation of some of Ianto's reactions and mannerisms.

Chronologically, this next one happened between the other two, but it's a different crossover and much earlier in the TW team's timeline. Link starts with the comment to The Extraterrestrial that started the whole thing.

Not really a title: Comment Crackfic
Authors: [personal profile] nancybrown, [personal profile] temporal_witch, [profile] wynkat1313, and [personal profile] queenfanfiction
Fandoms: Torchwood, Muppets, Sesame Street
Rating: R
Warning: Childhood icons plus Jack. Need I say more?
Excerpt:
"No, they look like puppets. Henson worked for our US branch ... " Gwen broke in, "We have a US branch?" "We did," Ianto said darkly.
Why you should read it: It's hysterically funny. Plus, well, the warning is really more of an advertisement, isn't it?
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Well, okay, maybe not the *first* rule, but it's up there. One of the top rules for surviving the internet without having a stroke or an aneurysm on a near-daily basis is that if something pushes more than one of your buttons, or pushes one of them reallyreally hard, look for confirmation before you freak out.

This works for lots of things. It works for spam and OMGFORWARDTHISTOEVERYONEYOUEVERMET warnings. It works for hoaxes and scams. And it works for rumors.

So, when somebody leaks a supposed casting call sheet for the next season of a show, and said call sheet not only takes pretty much everything anyone has ever criticized about the show ever (from minor character peeves to various flavors of fail) and shines a megawatt spotlight on them all but takes at least one of them to a completely new level of batshit, seriously, all I can do is roll my eyes. Until and unless something gets put out by the BBC and/or Starz confirming that malarkey, it pretty much looks like a really bad, really late April Fool's joke to me.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Title: How Harry Learned to Keep His Hands To Himself (Most of the Time)
Author: [personal profile] remuslives23
Fandoms: Harry Potter, Torchwood
Pairings/Rating: Harry/Draco, Jack/Ianto, PG
Summary: When is a Crup not a Crup? When it's a teleporting, time traveling, energy guzzling alien, that's when.
Why you should check it out: What's fun about crossovers is seeing how one set of characters copes with being thrust into the home territory of another set of characters, and what that brings out in both sets. This fic does that well, making for a very amusing Monday morning read.
