So, trying to crank out more [livejournal.com profile] who_reversebang fic and decided to try an online tarot spread. (I'm not at home with my own decks.) Of all the decks offered at http://www.facade.com/tarot , Tarot of the Cat People seemed the most appropriate for a Doctor Who related query.

Spread wasn't terribly helpful, more of a "well duh, I knew that" which is cool but, again, not helpful. Amusing, though, was seeing the Queen of Swords and Queen of Cups show up. That ... fits quite well indeed.

Come on, you know you wanna! *offers a large bar of dark chocolate and steaming mug of coffee*

In other news, while a nice warm epsom salt soak is good for many people's feet, it is apparently a Very Bad Idea when you are prone to eczema. Which, really, I should've figured out before trying it. Oops.

Whew!

firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
Finally have draft #1 done for my first deadline. Am brainstorming on the 2nd and chipping away at the third. If I can keep going on [profile] 5_for_five, even after the current round ends next week, I should be okay. *crosses fingers*

I have yet to write a single word of fiction today, and I didn't succeed in my goal of finishing my M & H fic for [community profile] bowtiesnblasters, but I did meet the [livejournal.com profile] 5_for_five goal and got a cool sticker for it:

Photobucket

I think I can tie the fic off with a scene or two, though, and have the rough draft done before Wednesday's art-prompt-claiming frenzy at [livejournal.com profile] who_reversebang. Then it'll be editing that one and getting it beta'ed whilst working on the others. It's good to be writing again.

For those of you who write, how has your week been? I've seen a few NaNo tickers floating around and am cheering from the sidelines.

I didn't make the [livejournal.com profile] 5_for_five goal this week, more like 5 for four, but that's still 2000+ words written! All of that was on my [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb and prior to getting my [community profile] bowtiesnblasters prompt for Mistletoe & Hallucinogens.

This week's goal is to get M & H fic done, as that's the shortest (or at least shortest word requirement) of the lot. At least a draft, maybe even beta-ed. Definitely hoping to submit it prior to Nov 16, the prompt-claim date for [livejournal.com profile] who_reversebang. If I can also manage another couple thousand words on the [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb before picking up that other prompt, so much the better, but small steps.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
How is everyone doing? I'm sorry I've been crap at keeping up with LJ. Work continues to kick my ass. I'm in my 3rd week covering for the regular evening supervisor's vacation, which is moderately insane (how am I supervising nurses with 20+ years experience???), and am finally getting a bit less panicky about it all. Hence the reading the flist more and attempting to get back into the swing of things.

So, of course, I went on a writing sign-up binge. I haven't written since the summer, to go by my [livejournal.com profile] 5_for_five tracking spreadsheet, and sadly that sounds about right. Mostly I've about had the energy for mindless games when online or passively reading.

I didn't get my act sufficiently together for [livejournal.com profile] tw_bigbang, but I've modified the idea and run with it for [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb. ETA: before anyone else has a minor coronary reading that before they see the banner below, TW=Torchwood, not Twilight. You know, that other batshit big-T fandom. :-D That seems to be taking off better, though I'm hanging onto the 3k or so I got done of the original to play with another time maybe. One of the nice things about [livejournal.com profile] tw_classic_bb is you have the option of a "mini-bang" of 7500 words, which is where I'm aiming for starters. If the characters get chatty, well, then maybe it'll go big.

Also signed up for the [profile] who_reversebang and Mistletoe and Hallucinogens at [community profile] bowtiesnblasters. Yes, the deadlines are sufficiently staggered to be sane. Ish.

Okay, the first two are on top of each other, but if I can't crank out 500+ words of Doctor/River before I even get to claim the art prompt for the other? Something is very wrong. What'll kill me is if either of the smallish fics blows up. Not that my fics ever do that. *eyeroll* At least I'm already on a roll writing the one that's due last, so it should be in good shape even though it'll get set aside when I get my prompts for the first two.

Erm, anyone got a TARDIS I can borrow? Vortex manipulator? Time-turner?

In case I've not yet tempted you to join in the two that are still taking sign-ups, here are their shiny banners:

firefly124: vastra and jenny with a backdrop of text saying "badass sword-wielding victorian crime-solving lesbians" (vastra7 by dawn_queen)
Squeee! My gift posted, and it's Vastra/Jenny, and I love it!

Title: Simple Observations
Author: [livejournal.com profile] templemarker
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Vastra/Jenny
Rating: PG-13
Why you should go read it right now: If the fact that it's Vastra/Jenny isn't enough, the author has also done an excellent job setting the tone with a narrative voice that puts you into both the Victorian timeperiod and Vastra's head very effectively. And it's sweet and understated in a way that totally fits these badass sword-wielding interspecies lesbians who solve crimes in Victorian London.

There has been lots of good fic posted. The masterlist is here and my Parker/Tara (with a hint of prior Parker/Maggie) Leverage fic is here. Mine never got quite as shippy as I'd hoped to make it, but my recipient seemed to like it, which is a relief.

In other, less squeeful, fannish news, unless I manage to pull a rabbit out of my hat in the next two days, I'm going to have to drop out of Torchwood Big Bang. Work is just sucking the life out of me (which is also why I haven't posted in weeks), and while I desperately want to write the bunny, reaching 10k words by Friday's rough draft deadline is, while not completely impossible, highly unlikely.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Finished Cryoburn the other night. Even knowing a particular character development was destined to be coming up, even seeing all the foreshadowing for exactly what it was, that was quite the gut-punch. No wonder I put off reading it. Cut for a spoiler that really isn't a spoiler, since Bujold had said all along that the next book would contain this particular element. )

Also, an epilogue composed of self-contained, exactly 100 word drabbles? With a definition for the unfamiliar of what a drabble is? Stroke of genius. Admittedly, if someone did that in fandom, as we're so accustomed to drabbles and drabble-series, it might not have gone over quite as well. But it was such a surprise and the format worked so well for what she was doing that I just loved it.

In other news, orientation at work proceeds apace. I definitely prefer working the floor to supervising, despite the fact I'm basically just pushing pills. I apparently have two more weeks of orientation scheduled, plus the iv certification class that hasn't been scheduled yet. But I'm definitely feeling more confident about it all.

The 3rd annual [community profile] wintercompanion Summer/Holiday fest has started with a lovely bit of Jack/Nine hurt/comfort. I'm looking forward to seeing them all. Very cool approach they took with the prompts, too, using the "psychic password" format we encountered in "The Doctor's Wife" of a color, a number, an emotion, and an aroma. Very effective and evocative, and the prompts are open for people to write/draw/create other things throughout the month, which should lead to seeing some intriguing variety on how people run with them.

I think I'm about over my "What the hell was I thinking?" attack re: my [community profile] femslash11 assignment and have moved into research mode, which is a very good thing.

And now, time to run around and do stuff to get ready for this weekend's Anadikia retreat. Coming up with appropriate offerings has been rather challenging. (I got it into my head that I needed special liquor offerings for each of the Temple patrons. Ginger liqueur for Zeus and Oracle of the Sun Shiraz for Apollon were easy enough to find. I'd wanted retsina for Pan, but nobody around here even knows what it is, much less carries it, including the place Tim found it a year or so ago. So I went with Bully Hill wine that has a goat for a logo. *facepalm*)

Have a great weekend all! Don't break the intarwebz while I'm gone!

Yay!

firefly124: fanfic writing is my therapy (writing therapy by savine_snape)
For the first time in months, I managed to write 500 words a day for at least 5 days out of the week. That included finishing off the fic that got posted, making some headway on my [community profile] wintercompanion fic, and entirely too much puttering around with TFTWSD.

Photobucket

Now if the thing that's actually got a due date looming would just show some sign of where the hell it's trying to go. :-D

Also, I made it through the "watch a gazillion videos" and "be shown a gazillion forms you will never remember" days of orientation and am on the floor tomorrow shadowing. Meep!

Yesterday was graduation. Yes, I graduated in December, but we only had the pinning ceremony then. This was the cap-and-gown deal. Due to having used up all my pool time (mostly on just getting through school in the first place without collapsing from exhaustion, but most recently brought the total down to near-zero by going to Aeternitas), I took off neither the night before nor the night after. Thus, the day is mostly a blur, though I do vaguely recall seeing and hugging classmates I'd not seen since December or so, so that was nice. Relying on others for pics though, as I did bring but did not use my camera at all.

Oh! One very memorable bit was seeing the prof I've been known to call Canon!Snape as grand high poohbah or whatever the official term is for the person who gets to carry the college's mace and pound it on the floor to punctuate things. That was ... very fitting. :-D

Fun was getting the voicemail after that work would like me to come in at 8pm please. I returned the call, pointed out I hadn't been to sleep yet since my previous shift, which they actually knew, and thus if they wanted me remotely functional, they'd muddle through and I'd be in at midnight as scheduled. Fortunately, the per diem who was on until 8 was able to stay till midnight. Well, fortunately by some lights. One of these days, I'd like my boss to actually have to fill in one of these gaps, as he is actually required to do but has never, ever done.

Did watch "The Rebel Flesh." Am very WTF about it. Spoilers! )

Thanks to a tweet from The Moff (Only matters to me, but today is the 6th anniversary of the broadcast of my first Dr Who. Blimey! But it's not the end of world ... oh!!), I also rewatched The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances at work last night. That's always fun, and I finally caught the explanation of something that I'd thought was a continuity error all this time. Jack is never shown seeing the outside of the TARDIS, so it always seemed a bit weird when he finally entered that he commented about it being "much bigger on the inside." He did, however, comment on it to the Doctor when Rose first introduced them, mentioning that he'd seen it when he'd thrown the Chula ambulance in front of them as bait and complimenting the paneling on their "capsule." Huh. Love finding little stuff like that.

Have this week off from tutoring. Plan is currently to dress all interviewy, grab a stack of resumes and the Yellow Pages, and apply in person to every nursing home within driving distance. After that, I think I'm left with making paper airplanes out of them and launching them at utter random.

Stopped at the local comic shop after graduation, ostensibly to check my folder (which had the latest DW comic, yay!) but mainly to follow up on a convo I'd just had with [livejournal.com profile] dawnrune about the possibility of a fic-writer meetup-and-write group along the lines of a wrimo whilst not waiting around for November. Turns out, there's already something in the works, which is kinda cool. Emphasis will, understandably, be on writers and artists who do manga/anime and gamer stuff, but open to whomever. That could be cool. In other news, I'm hoping that the added free time this week will see me finally a) trying to expand at least one or two of the drabbles I did at Aeternitas and b) trying out some of the spreads and concepts from [livejournal.com profile] ceciliatan's workshop on using the Tarot with writing.

Also need to write up something about Thargelia for the HTAZP blog. *winces* It's been a week already. Oops. And I need to get cracking if I'm going to do an additional choreography for Philokhoria on top of the troupe choreo I'm teaching the others. I'm thinking "Fireflies," though "Sandansko" and "Graovsko" are also possibilities. So just a few things on the to-do list then.

Hugs to all that want them, and have a great week!
firefly124: (Droxy!Snape and firefly)
Aeternitas was awesome. Amanda and her HPMA crew did a great job, and the Margate Hotel staff were friendlier and more accommodating than I've experienced in the two other cons I've attended. Also, my roommates, [livejournal.com profile] laiksmarei, [livejournal.com profile] lariope, and [livejournal.com profile] mollyssister, were great. I wish them all much unbroken sleep to make up for my horrendous snoring. (I wish some remedy would actually work for this. I really feel I've tried abso-effing-lutely everything, and none of it works. Well, the CPAP works, but then I can't sleep because I'm fighting to exhale, so that's not particularly useful either.)

Pics are up on my fannish FB. I've only tagged people who I know don't mind linking their FB to their cosplay, but if you're in there and want to, please feel free to tag yourself.

Now for the longish stuff, complete with writerly navel-gazing. )

So that's it! It was a wonderful time, and I can't wait to go back in 2013.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)

I may have lost my mind, but I've just offered up to five drabbles/ficlets over at [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction in the lightning round.

A little more info: The main auction (which I haven't worked up the courage to offer for yet, as that'd be a larger fic offering) runs through January 26. The "lightning round" is quicker version running through Monday, most offerings being smaller drabbles and ficlets, and done as a sort of "buy it now" setup. (Sort of like the "incentive drabbles" sometimes offered in other charity auctions, except they're handling it as a separate post with a different timeline.) The official charities designated for the auction are Queensland Government Flood Relief Appeal, RSPCA Queensland Flood Appeal, and The Australian Red Cross.
firefly124: charlie bradbury grooving in a glass elevator (Default)
Is there one? I mean, come on, if ever a "what did they declare this day for" thingy demanded a ficathon, surely it's National Whipped Cream Day. I mean, if we added a ficathon, we could probably very quickly make it International Whipped Cream Day.

So, who's with me? Either find someplace already running one, or have our own in comments here! Any and all fandoms and pairings (or more, or gen), obviously. Someone on Twitter already asked me for Jane/Maura whipped cream fic. Alas, I don't even know a fandom that has both a Jane and a Maura. But surely someone does!

ETA: Apparently that'd be Rizzoli & Isles, the new Cagney & Lacey, which I'm going to have to check out. Meanwhile, attempting to churn out (heh) at least one ficlet to get things rolling before I have to run to work.

My "usual suspects" are either traveling or already partying in the new year, so I'm tossing this out there. Anybody up for giving a short-short a quick once-over?

It's Doctor Who genfic, about 550 words. Mostly I need to know if it makes sense, but also if I'm making Jack sound too British, oddly enough. (I don't even know what to call that. Reverse Brit-pick?) It's for the [community profile] spoiler_song One Night of Writing, so I have until midnight PST, hence the "quick" part of the request.

Pretty please with cinnamon sugar on top?
